My fiance and I used to love getting a certain country subscription box before. We quit after the selection started to not be that great and it cost way too much. The subscription we were paying for was about $40 a month. A few weeks ago I came across a company called Universal Yums! and they are a monthly subscription box were each month you receive snacks from a different country. We were intrigued by it because those two things were our favorites about the prior box.... but we didn't have to worry about all of the meal products we would receive in the other box that required us to go and purchase other food. I was very surprise to find my box when it arrived because we have subscribed to there smallest box, the yum box, but we have received the yum yum box. They say in the message that we were upgraded since we are new customers. Their boxes come in three sizes the yum box (6+ treats), the yum yum box (12+ treats), and the super yum box (20+ treats). If you are interested in getting your own subscription their website is www.universalyums.com.
So each month is a different country, which I find awesome. I prefer it this way and I know there are some boxes you can find out there that will throw different snacks from all over the world into a box and call it a day. For February 2019 it was a trip to Italy. My fiance is very picky about food, so this was a great country to introduce him to trying new foods.
Upon opening the box we were greeted with a map of the country we are visiting. On the back of the map there is a scoring sheet, some trivia and a puzzle to help you guess at the country for next month.
It also comes with this great little booklet that tells you about different places in the country, trivia and about each of the food items. I enjoy learning about different countries, so I wanted to read about the different places..... but my fiance wanted to jump right in with the food. Also, on the back of the book they give you a clue for next month. "Next month we'll visit a place that is old, and crafty, creative, and so very cold. If you're hungry, just reach for their baskets of bread, or cinnamon chocolates, or unique pepper spreads." We have some speculations on next month, but really aren't sure.
The first item that we tried was the Anello Gusto Pizza Rings. These are a pizza flavored corn snack..... and very popular with my other half. This was his favorite. It reminded me of a pizza flavored Funyuns. I was lucky that I got five of them because he wanted them all.... lol.
Alfredo's Truffle Chips
I found these to taste very good. They do have a strong truffle taste, but the name alone gives that away. They are described in the book as potato chips with black truffles. My other half was scared to try them at first because truffles are new to him, but once I got him to actually try them he ate the whole bag.
Taralli Limone e Pepe
These are described as a lemon-pepper flavored wheat snack. They look like a pretzel in a circle shape and have a strong lemon scent. You can taste both the lemon and the pepper in them and I think that it has just the right amount of seasoning. Ryan was not a big fan of these, but I kinda like them. I think they are growing on me.
Amarettini Cookies
These are crispy almond cookies and my personal favorite of the box. I stole this back for myself after I gave Ryan a few. They a tiny, crispy and crunchy cookies. That have a lot of almond flavoring in them. I enjoyed the strong almond taste and I am sad now that there are none left.
Froletti Al Limone Cookies
These are lemon cookies. I am still a little disappointed in Ryan that he refused to try them. I think there were only 4 items that he would not try, so I guess it's fine for his first try. They are really cute little square bite sized cookies. You can smell a sweet lemon aroma to the cookie. It taste more like a shortbread cookie or a biscuit, but I'm not really getting a lemon taste to them.
Rustichelle al Rosmarino
These are rosemary crackers. These are little square crackers that are crunchy and you can taste the rosemary without it overpowering your senses. It took awhile before I could get Ryan to try these, but I'm very happy that he did and he actually liked them.
Orange-Carrot Buondolce
This is an Italian carrot cake with orange cream. Ryan jumped all over this for his love of carrot cake. He really liked it and I liked that they sent two of each of the cakes since they are single serving treats. He proceeded to eat some of mine when I wasn't looking. I really liked how it tasted and the orange wasn't too overpowering.
Moretta Tiramisu
This is the other cake that we received which is a chocolate-covered cake with coffee and custard. Ryan refused to try this because caffeine doesn't sit well in him, so I didn't push. Also I really like Tiramisu, so I was greedily wanting to have two. I really like the fact that these snacks really do look like what is on the packaging. I think that it tasted really good and it was pretty moist for a pre-packaged cake.
Cuorenero Nocciole
This is milk chocolate with hazelnuts. Ryan jumped at this because it is something familiar. We get different chocolate with hazelnuts when we go to the store, but it is our first time trying this brand. The chocolate is creamy and there is a lot of hazelnuts in it. I appreciate that because I don't think that many chocolate brands put enough nuts into the bar.... probably to save money.
Cuorenero Mediterranei
This is a white chocolate with saffron bar. Ryan wouldn't try this because he didn't want anymore chocolate that night. I don't think he even saw that there was saffron in it. My friend says that she really likes saffron, but it is my first time trying it. The chocolate has a little heart on it. I think that it tasted really good and I'll have to hide this from Ryan. This really is a chocolate to be savored.
Cappuccino Sorini
The next 3 items came in the Yum Bag! this is a bag that contains smaller treats and each one we received 4 or 5 of them. This one is a cappuccino cream and cereal truffle. Upon opening the package you can really smell the coffee. The taste is perfectly balanced between the strong coffee and the sweet chocolate. Also they found a balance between the smoothness and the crunch of the cereal.
Effervescenti Fizzy Candies
These are lemon and orange fizzy fruit candies. Ryan was getting impatient and wouldn't let me look these up. he thought it was just going to be an orange hard candy. He wasn't prepared for it to start fizzing and thought something was wrong. lol he said that it was pretty intense. The orange hard candy upon putting it in you mouth has a orange taste. When you breakthrough the hard candy layer there is fizzy candy inside that foams up the inside of your mouth.
Sorini Gianduiotti
These are hazelnut chocolates and our last item from this box. I found them to have a very creamy hazelnut taste. Ryan refused to try these after his hard candy scare.
We I think overall loved the Italy box. I know that I did. I don't think that there was anything in it that I disliked and I know that it is very hard to please my fiance, Ryan. We are both looking forward to the March 2019 Yum Box. I can't wait to see what the next country is.
